The details of the landscape was detailed to the point of dragging down the story, though it did paint a beautiful picture through words. For me, however, I prefer stories to be complete, even if the ending isn't a happy one. Many of these short stories ended so abruptly that it made me think it was unfinished. That need for finality was left unsated.

It's worth the read, but it most definitely isn't one of my favorites.

MainTravelled Roads edition by Hamlin Garland Reference eBooks Reviews

Just a pleasure to read. An excellent overview of rural America between 1880 and probably 1910. I really enjoyed this book.
Nice stories, enjoyable read.
This is an important work of short stories set in the 1860's Midwest. The description of the landscape is poetic, but the characters are one dimensional and repetitive. The tone is mostly dark, reflecting frustration, despair, etc.

I would recommend this book to someone who "wants to see what the fuss is about" who likes landscape description. Good book for discussion and analysis.
I read this about 30 years ago and decided to get a copy for one of the other teachers after a discussion about how to portray life in middle America in the late 19th century. He loves it, as do I, for its vivid portrayal of everyday life in the period for the middle class as a set of short stories.
liked this so much I bought a collection of all his writings. Excellent.
Hamlin Garland and Stephen Crane get no respect. Throw in a William Dean Howells, and you've got the makings of a new American Realism, but far too few teachers know that, as evidenced by the fact they seldom teach these authors in American Literature. Besides all that, Garland offers up a painfully realistic view of "the good old days" in middle America.
I have been a fan of the American Realistic Period since I studied at Central Michigan University. This was one of my course books and it was like an old friend. The stories, though familiar, were still endearing and entertaining. It is a good reminder how events in a nation can come full circle and we are now living in times similar to those 150 years ago.
